Head teacher Helen Jones thought the new tradition imported from America was “fantastic” – but it also created a problem when they realised a pupil was not going to attend because of the cost of the outfit. “It becomes an overwhelming experience for a lot of our children, particularly girls, with the pressure to look their very best,” she said. “It can run into hundreds [of pounds], if not thousands, and that’s something that I never wanted to encourage.” So …

Sarah Sanders’ past won’t haunt her in Arkansas

(CNN)There’s nothing quite like the White House, but there’s no place like home for departing White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. After more than three years with President Donald Trump, Sanders is leaving Washington to go back home to Arkansas. If the President has his way, Sanders will be the next governor of her state. Look, I’ve known Sanders for 15 years. I saw her grow up in the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion when her father, Mike Huckabee, was governor. I’ve worked with her on his presidential campaigns. I can tell you that if anyone were going to make history by being the first female governor of Arkansas, it would be Sarah Huckabee Sanders. (And if any two were going to …

I don’t wear high heels for anyone but me. Got that, boss?

(CNN)Nearly 20,000 people in Japan have signed a petition calling for an end to work dress codes which make wearing heels mandatory for women. The campaign is just one of several worldwide efforts over the last several years to undo arcane rules which require women to work in shoes which are uncomfortable, impede their performance at work, and can even be dangerous. A Japanese government minister went so far as to say Wednesday that heels are “occupationally necessary and appropriate.” In fairness, he appears to be doing a sub-par job without them. I have mixed feelings about heels at work. A decent metal spike under your feet can feel powerful, almost warrior-like. As a relatively short person (I’m 5 feet, …

Normandy tries to keep alive ‘infinite gratitude’ for D-Day

President Donald Trump and other world leaders will gather next week in Normandy to mark the 75th anniversary of the invasion, which still looms large throughout this region. Normandy beaches, cemeteries and World War II memorials embody what French President Macron called “our entire nation’s infinite gratitude.” Renaud, now 85, recalls the strange atmosphere in Sainte-Mere-Eglise, the first village liberated by the Allies, on the morning of June 6, 1944. He could hear the fighting at a short distance but in the village, everything was calm. “The civilians came down on the pavement and tried to fraternize with the Americans by making victory signs, waving hello, etc. But there hasn’t been any fraternization from the Americans because — you have …

Elections in EU and India tilt the world’s largest democracies towards populism

(CNN)The voters in two of the world’s largest democracies have spoken — and their message is clear. Those results come hot on the heels of an Australian election in which voters contradicted months of polling and chose to retain the right-wing government of Scott Morrison, an evangelical Christian climate change denier. Across the world there has been a consistent shift to the political right, as voters abandon the center-left and centrist parties, which once held power in many democracies, after years of austerity and economic downturn. In Europe, the turn to the right — with Britain perhaps being the best example — has been fueled by a desire to recapture past glories. Pro-Brexit lawmakers often talk of their project as …
